SJK(C) vs SK: Which Language Gap Should You Close First?
Close the gap in your child's medium of instruction first: Chinese for a SJK(C) child, Bahasa Malaysia for a SK child. That is the language every other subject is taught in, so a weakness there drags Maths, Science and confidence down together. Once reading in the main language is secure, the second and third languages catch up far faster. The medium of instruction decides the order
Start with the language the school teaches in. In a SJK(C) classroom, Maths and Science are taught in Chinese, so a child who cannot read Chinese fluently is not just weak in one subject; they are locked out of three. In a SK classroom the same is true for Bahasa Malaysia.
Parents often want to fix English first because it feels the most useful for the future. That instinct is right in the long run, but it is the wrong first move for a child who is struggling now. Fix the language that carries the timetable, and everything else gets lighter.

Why one weak language hides behind another
A gap in the main language often shows up as a gap somewhere else. A SJK(C) child who fails Maths word problems (应用题) usually reads the question wrong, not the numbers. A SK child who copies the Ejaan list every week but still fails the test has a suku kata problem, not a memory problem.

What “closing the gap” looks like in each language
Each language has its own staircase, and the steps are not interchangeable. Chinese moves from 认字 to 词语 to 造句 and on to reading comprehension. Bahasa Malaysia moves from suku kata to ejaan to perbendaharaan kata and membina ayat. English moves from letter sounds to phonics to vocabulary and reading.

How long before the second language can start?

FAQ
My SJK(C) child is fine in Chinese but weak in BM. Do I still start with Chinese?
No. If Chinese is secure, BM is the next gap to close, because it is the language the child will need most at secondary school. The trial will confirm that Chinese really is secure and not just adequate.
Can my child learn all three languages at the same time?
