Word recognition is the starting point of learning ability
Most learning problems in primary school are reading problems in disguise. This page explains, step by step, how DuoDuo builds reading ability — and why it works.
The DuoDuo Method is a staircase-style word-recognition system delivered 1-to-1 in Chinese, Bahasa Malaysia and English. Children first build a stable sight vocabulary, then move through words, sentences, paragraphs and finally composition. Each child follows a personal progress chart and teachers guide with questions instead of giving answers. Typical targets: 150 words at age 4, 500 at 5, 1,000 at 6, 1,500 at 7 and 2,000–3,000 by age 8 — meeting and exceeding Malaysian Ministry of Education standards.

3. Staircase word recognition
Characters and words are introduced in a deliberate sequence with high-frequency repetition, live reading tests and immediate correction.
4. Words → sentences → paragraphs
Once recognition is stable, children learn word usage, sentence building (造句 / membina ayat), expansion and expression.
5. Comprehension & composition
Reading comprehension and writing are introduced only when the foundation can support them — which is why they then improve quickly.
6. Independence
Teachers step back progressively. The child learns to preview, revise and complete work without being told.

Why doesn't DuoDuo offer a Chinese or BM composition (作文) class?
Because composition ability isn't built by memorising model essays. It grows from recognising enough words, understanding sentences, organising ideas and writing complete sentences. Our language programmes already include vocabulary, sentence patterns, sentence building and expression — the real foundations of writing. Once those are solid, composition improves naturally.
How many Chinese characters should a child know by Primary 1?
We target about 1,000 recognised words by age 6 so a child enters Primary 1 able to read instructions and textbooks. By age 8 our students typically recognise 2,000–3,000 words, above the Ministry of Education benchmark.
How do you know the method is working?
Every child is tested live on the words they've learned, and the progress chart is updated. Parents receive regular feedback on completion, progress, attitude and areas to strengthen.
