Why 华语补习 should begin with 认字, not comprehension

Most Chinese tuition for primary school starts where the school textbook is: comprehension passages, 词语 exercises and, by Primary 3, short 作文. That works for a child who already recognises enough characters. For the child who does not, every passage is a wall of unknown shapes and the lesson becomes guessing.
