My child can't read Bahasa Malaysia — where should we start?
Children who can't read Bahasa Malaysia usually haven't mastered suku kata (syllables). The fix is a sequence, not more memorising: suku kata → ejaan (spelling) → perbendaharaan kata (vocabulary) → membina ayat (sentence building) → membaca dan menulis (reading and writing). With 1-to-1 practice most children move from guessing to reading in a few months.
Why weekly Ejaan tests don't fix the problem
Most children in Chinese-medium primary schools meet BM as a third language, with little exposure at home. Schools test Ejaan weekly, so parents drill spelling lists. The child memorises for Friday and forgets by Monday — because they never learned to decode.
Bahasa Malaysia is highly regular: once a child can read syllables (ba, bu, ka, ki, tang, ping…), they can read almost any word. Skipping suku kata and going straight to spelling lists is like teaching someone to type before they know the alphabet.
The sequence that works
This is the order DuoDuo teachers use in 1-to-1 BM lessons:
- Suku kata: open and closed syllables, blending confidently
- Ejaan: spelling built from syllables, not memory
- Perbendaharaan kata: everyday vocabulary and correct usage
- Ayat pendek and membina ayat: short sentences, then sentence expansion
- Membaca dan menulis: reading passages and writing structured paragraphs
What parents can do at home
Ten minutes a day of syllable reading beats an hour of spelling drills. Read BM signboards, packaging and picture books aloud together. Praise decoding attempts, not just correct answers.
If your child is in Primary 2 or above and still guessing words, get a 1-to-1 assessment — the gap is usually smaller than it looks and closes quickly with the right starting point.
