Free Trial Class at DuoDuo: What to Expect and How to Read the Results
The DuoDuo Kidz Academy free trial is a single 60-minute, 1-to-1 lesson in one language (Chinese, Bahasa Malaysia or English) with no payment. The teacher assesses the child’s real starting point through reading and word-recognition tasks, teaches a short lesson using the DuoDuo method, and then explains to the parent where the child currently sits on the staircase system and what the first weeks would focus on. The result is a level, not a grade, and a lower-than-expected level is useful information, not bad news.
Before the trial: choose one language
The trial covers one language only, so pick the one you are most worried about. For many SJK(C) families that is Bahasa Malaysia; for some SK families it is Chinese or English. Bring nothing special; the teacher supplies all materials.
Tell the branch your child’s age and school year when you book via WhatsApp, and mention anything specific, such as a recent poor Ejaan result or a reluctance to read aloud.
During the trial: what the teacher is doing
The first part is assessment disguised as conversation and simple tasks. The teacher will ask the child to recognise words, read short phrases or sentences, and perhaps write a little, watching for where the child hesitates, guesses or stops.
The second part is a real lesson at the level the teacher has just found. You will see the DuoDuo method in action: the teacher asks guiding questions and never gives the answer directly, even when the child is stuck. Notice how your child responds to that; most children become more engaged, not less.

After the trial: the conversation with the parent
The teacher will tell you where your child currently sits. For Chinese this may be a word count and a stage on the 认字 → 词语 → 造句 path; for Bahasa Malaysia it may be suku kata, ejaan or membina ayat; for English, letter sounds, phonics or reading.
You will also hear what the first weeks would focus on and roughly how the progress chart would be set up. Ask any question you like; this is the moment to understand the plan.
How to read the result
Parents are sometimes surprised that a Primary 3 child is placed at a Primary 1 word level. This is not a judgement on the child or on you. It is the reason homework has been a struggle, finally made visible. Teaching at that level is what allows the child to catch up.
The reference points DuoDuo uses are roughly 150 words at age 4, 500 at age 5, 1,000 at age 6, 1,500 at age 7 and 2,000–3,000 at age 8. A child below the target for their age simply starts at the right step and moves up.

Can I sit in during the trial?
Ask your branch. Many children perform differently when a parent is in the room, so teachers may suggest you observe from nearby and join for the feedback conversation at the end.
