What to Expect in a Trial Class for Your Child, and How to Prepare
A good trial class lets your child try a real lesson with a real teacher while you watch how they respond. Expect a warm welcome, a short assessment of what your child already knows, a few activities and some feedback at the end. Prepare your child with a simple, positive explanation, bring a snack and water, and use the checklist below to decide whether the centre is a good fit.

What a trial class is for
It gives you and your child a low-risk way to see if the teaching style, teacher and place suit you.
A chance to see real teaching
Brochures describe a method; a trial shows it. You can see how the teacher speaks, how your child reacts and whether the activities are age-appropriate.
A starting point for your child
Many trial lessons include a quick assessment, so the teacher can suggest where to begin and which areas need support.
Before, during and after
Three short steps keep it simple.
Make the trial work for you
Before: prepare your child
Explain simply: "We are going to try a fun class and meet a new teacher." Avoid pressure or tests. Choose a time when your child is rested and fed.
Quick tip: keep it light
No quizzing beforehand.
During: observe
Watch how the teacher engages your child, whether your child is comfortable and how activities flow. It is normal for a child to be shy at first.
Quick tip: note three things
What did the teacher do well? How did my child react? What was unclear?
After: ask and decide
Ask for feedback, a suggested starting level and fees in writing. Ask your child what they enjoyed. Take time before deciding.
Quick tip: ask for a plan
A clear plan shows the centre has a method.
Questions to ask after the trial
Bring these to the conversation.
- What did you notice about my child's strengths and gaps?
- What level would you start with and why?
- How often should my child come and for how long?
- How will you share progress with me?
- What are the fees, and what is included?
If your child is shy or upset
Some children need a few minutes to warm up. A good teacher will go slowly, use play and give the child space. If your child is very upset, take a break and try again another day.
A trial that goes badly is not a verdict on your child. It may just be the wrong time or fit.
