Why DuoDuo teachers never give the answer (and why your child learns faster because of it)
Giving a child the answer solves today's homework; guiding them to find it builds the ability to solve tomorrow's. DuoDuo teachers ask, prompt and explain until the child reaches the answer themselves, so children learn “why the answer is this” rather than “what the answer is”. Over time this produces children who can preview, revise and complete work without adults.
The dependence trap
Children who are always given answers learn one skill very well: waiting. They stop reading the question carefully, because an adult will explain it anyway. By upper primary, they can't start a slightly different question type on their own.
What guiding looks like in a DuoDuo lesson
A child is stuck on a Maths word problem. Instead of explaining, the teacher asks:
- “Read the question again. Which words tell you what to find?”
- “What do we know? Write those numbers down.”
- “Is the answer going to be bigger or smaller than this number? Why?”
- “Try it. If it's wrong, we'll look at where.”
Why it works
Each question forces the child to do the thinking. It's slower on day one and much faster by month three. Children start to enjoy the moment they get there themselves — and that motivation is what carries them when no teacher is around.
