Moving House or Changing School? How to Keep Your Child's Learning Consistent
A move or school change does not have to reset a child's learning if three things travel with them: the daily reading routine, a record of what they can already do, and a familiar teaching method at the other end. What actually gets lost in a move
Children rarely forget what they know because of a move. They lose the routine that kept it growing, and they lose the adult who knew exactly where they were. A new teacher starting from zero, or from a syllabus rather than the child, is the real setback.
Job transfers between KL, Penang and the northern states, or a return to a hometown in Perak or Melaka, are common for Malaysian families. Planning for continuity is as important as packing.
Keep the routine, even in boxes
The bedtime book and morning word cards should be the last things packed and the first things unpacked. A child who keeps their fifteen-minute reading routine through a move settles faster because one part of the day is unchanged.
If the move is between school types, for example from a SK to a SJK(C) or the reverse, be ready for the language balance to shift. The third language will need extra daily minutes for a term.
- Pack a small bag: current word cards, two favourite books, the progress record
- Keep the same reading time and order every day of the move
- Tell the new school and tutor exactly which words are secure
Carry a record, not a memory
Ask the current teacher or tutor for a list of what your child can do: recognised words, phonics stage, suku kata level. Written down, this saves the new teacher weeks of guessing and saves your child weeks of repeating.

That means a child transferring from Wangsa Maju to Bayan Lepas is picked up at the same step. The new teacher reads the chart, tests a few words to confirm, and continues. Teachers at every branch are trained and certified in the same DuoDuo method, so the questions-not-answers style feels familiar on the first day.
Before you move, do this

Will my child need to redo the trial or assessment at the new branch?
No full restart. The new teacher checks a few words from the chart to confirm the level and continues from there.
