Why Memorising Model Essays Fails: Building a Real 作文 Foundation
Memorising model essays fails because composition is not a memory task; it is the output of word recognition, vocabulary, sentence building and paragraph structure working together. A child who lacks any of those layers cannot adapt a memorised essay to a new title. DuoDuo Kidz Academy does not run a standalone 作文 class for this reason and builds writing through 认字 → 词语 → 造句 → 段落 → 作文 instead.

What happens when a memorised essay meets a new title
A child who memorises “我的妈妈” can reproduce it well. Give the same child “一个难忘的人” and the essay comes out as “我的妈妈” with the title changed, or the child freezes. Markers see this constantly: opening lines that do not match the topic, descriptive passages lifted from a different context, and endings that could belong to any essay.
School-based assessment in Malaysian primary schools now places more weight on classroom writing across the year, not on a single exam. That makes memorised essays even less useful, because the titles keep changing and the teacher knows the child's real level.
Composition is the top of a staircase
DuoDuo Kidz Academy's Chinese path is 认字 → 词语 → 造句 → 阅读理解 → 段落 → 作文. Composition is last because it uses everything below it. The child must recognise enough words to have choices, know enough 词语 to be precise, build sentences fluently enough to think about content rather than grammar, and structure a paragraph before structuring five.
This is why DuoDuo has no standalone composition class. A 作文 class for a child whose word count is below the level of the essay title is a class in copying. Fix the layer that is weak, and composition improves without being taught directly.
Diagnose which layer is missing
Parents can find the weak layer in one sitting. Give the child a simple title, such as 我的周末, and ask them to talk about it for two minutes before writing anything.
- Cannot talk about it: the problem is ideas and vocabulary, not writing. Read and discuss more.
- Talks well but writes little: the gap is between speaking and 造句. Practise oral sentences, then write.
- Writes sentences but they do not connect: the missing layer is 段落. Teach one idea per paragraph with a first sentence that states it.
- Writes well but keeps stopping for characters: word recognition and writing vocabulary are behind. Go back to cards and reading.
Build the paragraph before the essay
A paragraph is the unit that most Primary 3 to 5 children have never been taught. Practise one paragraph a week: a first sentence that says what it is about, two or three sentences that add details, and a last sentence that closes it. Use the child's real experiences, which supply the details that model essays cannot.
Once a child can write a solid paragraph, a composition is simply three or four of them in order: what happened first, what happened next, how it ended, how the child felt. The structure is learned once and works for any title.
Reading feeds writing
Children who read ten minutes a day absorb sentence patterns, connectors and vocabulary without memorising anything. A child who has met 兴高采烈 in three stories will use it correctly; a child who memorised it from a list of 好词好句 will use it in the wrong place.
Keep a personal word and phrase notebook from reading, not from a printed list. Words the child chose are words the child will use.
How DuoDuo builds writing
In DuoDuo Kidz Academy's 1-to-1 lessons, writing grows from the child's own word base and sentences, tracked on a personal progress chart. Teachers guide with questions such as “What happened next?” and “How did that feel?” and never write the sentence for the child. Over 14 years and 10,000+ families, this order has proved far more durable than any bank of model essays.

FAQ
Is reading model essays useless?
Reading them as examples of structure is fine. Memorising them to reproduce in an exam is what fails. Read, discuss the structure, then write about the child's own life.
My Primary 4 child has a 作文 exam next month. What can help quickly?
Practise one paragraph a day on everyday titles, orally then written, and learn one structure: beginning, two middle paragraphs, ending. That transfers to any title.
Why does DuoDuo not offer a composition class?
Because composition depends on recognition, vocabulary and sentence building. DuoDuo builds those in 1-to-1 lessons and composition follows naturally rather than being taught in isolation.
