SJK(C) vs SK vs International School: How to Choose a Primary School in Malaysia
There is no single best school; the right choice depends on your child, your family's languages, your goals, your location and your budget. Chinese primary schools (SJK(C)) teach mainly in Mandarin with Bahasa Malaysia and English as subjects, national schools (SK) teach mainly in Bahasa Malaysia with English and optional language classes, and international schools typically teach in English and charge higher fees. Visit, ask questions and look at your child's readiness in each language.

The three options in plain language
This is a general overview; details vary by school, so always check with the school and the ministry.
SJK(C), SK and international schools
SJK(C) are vernacular Chinese primary schools where Mandarin is the main medium, with BM and English taught as subjects. SK are national schools where BM is the main medium, with English and Chinese or other languages available as language subjects. International schools offer foreign curricula, usually taught in English, and are private, so fees are typically higher.
Why the language load matters
In a Chinese school, children read and write a lot of Chinese from Year 1, so many families prepare their children with character recognition beforehand. In national schools, BM reading comes first, and in international schools English literacy matters most.
How to decide
Look at the child, the family and the school together.
Four questions to guide you
What are your family's language goals?
Do you want strong Chinese literacy, strong BM, or strong English? Think about the next ten years, not just Year 1.
Quick tip: write down goals
Rank your top three goals.
What does your child need?
A child who loves stories may thrive anywhere; a child who struggles with languages may need more support. Consider temperament and learning style.
Quick tip: think about strengths
Match the school to the child.
What is practical?
Look at distance, school hours, fees, siblings, after-school care and available places. A good school that is exhausting to reach may not be a good fit.
Quick tip: do a test commute
Try the route at school-run time.
Things to check at each school
Visit and ask.
- Language of instruction and how many hours of each language.
- Class sizes and homework expectations.
- How the school supports children who are behind in a language.
- Admission process, deadlines and any age or document requirements.
- Fees, books, uniform and extra costs.
Preparing for whichever school you choose
Whatever you choose, early literacy in the main language helps. For Chinese schools that means word recognition and basic writing; for national schools, BM syllables and reading; for international schools, English phonics.
A short readiness check can show where your child stands and what to practise in the months before Year 1.
