The school holiday plan children enjoy has three parts: twenty minutes of reading or word cards every morning, one project they choose for the week, and free play for the rest of the day. That keeps word recognition from slipping without turning the holiday into school. Why a plan is needed at all

The plan does not need to be strict. It needs to be daily and short. Children accept a small fixed task far more easily than a big occasional one.
The morning twenty minutes
Do the learning first, before the day gets away. For a 4- to 6-year-old, that is word cards and one picture book. For a 7- to 10-year-old, it is a chapter of a book in one language plus five sentences of writing about anything at all.

- Tuesday, Thursday: English phonics or a chapter book
- Saturday: Bahasa Malaysia suku kata or a short story
- Sunday: the child chooses the language and the book
One project per week
A project gives the holiday a shape and gives reading a purpose. Let the child pick: a family recipe book, a map of the neighbourhood, a comic about their pet, a scrapbook of a trip to Taiping or Melaka. The rule is that it must contain words the child writes themselves.

Only if the school set them. Otherwise, daily reading and one project do more for the next term than a pack of worksheets that gets finished in the last three days.
