Cikgu tadika, guru tadika: what the role actually is

A cikgu tadika or guru tadika teaches children aged 4 to 6 in a kindergarten or preschool setting. In Malaysia this is the stage before Primary 1 (Tahun 1), so the job is about early literacy, numbers, social habits and confidence rather than exam content.

The best preschool teachers are not the ones with the most certificates. They are patient, consistent, cheerful in the morning and able to hold the attention of a small group of four-year-olds. If you enjoy children and can follow a structure, this is a career you can grow into.

Minimum qualifications: SPM, STPM or Diploma

Most private preschools in Malaysia, including DuoDuo Kidz Academy, accept candidates with a minimum of SPM, STPM or a Diploma. A Diploma in Early Childhood Education is an advantage but not a requirement, because full training is provided once you join.

Fresh graduates and school leavers are welcome. Many of our preschool teachers started without any teaching experience and learned the DuoDuo method on the job. Registered preschools also apply for the relevant teaching permit for staff through KPM/JPN, and we guide new teachers through that paperwork.

What a preschool teacher's day looks like at DuoDuo Kidz Academy

At a high level, the morning is theme-based lessons in a small class, with early literacy in Chinese, Bahasa Malaysia and English built in. Children at DuoDuo Kidz Academy follow the staircase word-recognition system, so a four-year-old works towards about 150 words, a five-year-old about 500 and a six-year-old about 1,000 words, ready for Primary 1.

You will also update each child's personal progress chart and share short feedback with parents.
