Year 1 First Term Survival Guide for Malaysian Parents
The first term of Primary 1 (一年级) is a shock because everything changes at once: longer hours, written homework, weekly spelling and Ejaan tests, and a class of thirty instead of ten. Most children settle within eight to ten weeks if three things are in place: a predictable afternoon, someone who checks they understood the day's lesson, and a word-recognition level close to the 1,000 words that Primary 1 assumes. What actually changes in the first term
Primary 1 is not a bigger kindergarten. The school day is longer, the child sits at a desk for most of it, and for the first time work is sent home to be finished. In a SJK(C) there are typically three languages of homework a week; in a SK, BM and English carry the load.
The pace also changes. KSSR expects a Primary 1 child to read simple passages by the middle of the year. A child who arrives recognising 300 Chinese characters instead of the 1,000 DuoDuo Kidz Academy targets at age 6 will feel behind from the first week, even if they are bright.
The four problems that appear by week three
The same four complaints come up in almost every Primary 1 family we meet, and they are all fixable.
None of these means the child is not ready for school. They mean the child needs an afternoon that repairs what the morning stretched.

Why the afternoon matters more than the morning
Schools teach the syllabus; they cannot teach each child at their own level. That job falls to whoever has the child from 1pm to 7pm. If that is a grandparent or a maid, homework gets finished but not understood. If it is a busy parent at 9pm, everyone ends the day upset.

Is it normal for a Primary 1 child to cry every morning in the first month?
Yes, for the first three to four weeks. If it continues past two months, or comes with silence about school, it is worth checking whether the child is struggling to read what is on the board.
Should I switch my child to a different school if term one goes badly?
Rarely. Most term-one problems are about reading level and routine, not the school. Fix those first and reassess at the end of the year.
