Suku Kata Explained for Parents: Open and Closed Syllables Made Simple
Suku kata are the syllable building blocks of every Bahasa Malaysia word. Open syllables (suku kata terbuka) end with a vowel, such as ba, ki and su; closed syllables (suku kata tertutup) end with a consonant, such as bas, kit and sun. A child who can blend these two types can read almost any BM word without memorising it, which is why DuoDuo Kidz Academy makes suku kata the first step of its BM staircase.
What suku kata actually are
A suku kata is one beat of a word. “Buku” has two beats, bu and ku. “Sekolah” has three, se-ko-lah. BM words are almost always built from these clear, predictable beats, which makes the language much easier to decode than English once a child knows the system.
This is the foundation for Ejaan, reading and eventually writing. When a child can hear and see the beats, spelling stops being guesswork.
Open syllables (suku kata terbuka)
An open syllable ends with a vowel sound. It is always a consonant followed by a vowel, or a vowel alone.
Children usually master these first because there are only a few patterns to learn and the sound is easy to stretch out.
- ba, bi, bu, be, bo
- ka, ki, ku, ke, ko
- Words: bu-ku, ma-ta, ka-ki, i-bu, ba-pa
Closed syllables (suku kata tertutup)
A closed syllable ends with a consonant. This is where many SJK(C) children get stuck, because the final consonant must be attached to the vowel before it, not read as a separate sound.
The trick is to teach the child to read the open syllable first and then “close the door” with the final consonant: ba plus s becomes bas.
- bas, bin, buk, cat, dan
- Words: ma-kan, pin-tu, tem-pat, ram-but
- Special combinations: ng, ny, kh and sy count as one sound (bu-nga, nya-nyi).
How to practise blending at home
Blending means sliding the syllables together into a whole word. Keep sessions short, five to ten minutes, and always finish on a success.
- Clap the beats: say “se-ko-lah” with one clap per syllable, then say it fast.
- Syllable cards: write ba, tu, ku, bu on cards and let your child build real words.
- Cover and reveal: cover the second half of a word, read the first syllable, then reveal and blend.
- Hunt for words: find every word with a closed syllable on one page of the BM textbook.

At what age should a child learn suku kata?
Most children can start simple open syllables at age 5 or 6, before Primary 1. Older children who missed this step should go back to it rather than skipping ahead.
My child reads the syllables but cannot join them. Why?
This is a blending issue, not a recognition issue. Practise saying syllables faster and faster until they merge, and use clapping to keep the rhythm.
