How Many Words Should a 5-Year-Old Recognise? The 500-Word Target

Why 500 words at age 5
Five hundred words is the point where a child stops decoding every single word and starts reading short sentences. It is the middle step of DuoDuo Kidz Academy's staircase: about 150 words at age 4, about 500 at age 5, about 1,000 at age 6 so the child walks into Primary 1 (一年级) already reading.
The number is not a race. It is a checkpoint. A child at 300 words in the middle of their fifth year is fine; a child at 300 words the month before Primary 1 needs a plan.
Which 500 words
The right 500 are the words a child meets every day: family, food, body, colours, numbers, school, weather, and the function words that glue sentences together (的, 是, 我, 你, 有). High-frequency words come first because they appear on every page.
In DuoDuo's staircase word-recognition system (阶梯式认字系统), new words are always built on known ones. 日 leads to 明 leads to 明天. That is why the count climbs faster after the first 150; each new character has a hook.
A ten-minute home check
You do not need a test kit. Write 30 common words your child has seen at school or in books on cards, mix them, and sort as you go.
- Pile 1: read instantly and correctly (secure)
- Pile 2: read after a pause or with a hint (learning)
- Pile 3: cannot read (not yet)
- If Pile 1 is about 80 percent, your child's real recognised bank is likely close to the level of words you chose

Does the 500-word target apply to English and Bahasa Malaysia too?
The staircase numbers are for Chinese word recognition. English is tracked through letter sounds, phonics and sight words; Bahasa Malaysia through suku kata and ejaan. Each language has its own progress chart.
My child can read but cannot write the words. Is that a problem?
No. Recognition comes before writing. DuoDuo builds writing from 认字 to 词语 to 造句 to 段落; reading first is the correct order.
Is 500 words above the national standard?
