Tuition Centre vs After-School Care vs Preschool: Which Model Fits You?

A tuition centre suits owners with commercial premises, evening and weekend availability and a teaching background; an after-school care centre (安亲班) suits owners with larger premises, weekday afternoon hours and an operations mindset, and may involve JKM as well as KPM; a preschool (tadika) suits owners with morning hours, a child-development background and KPM kindergarten registration. Each has a different licensing route, different hours and a different parent. DuoDuo Kidz Academy combines all three in one centre model for ages 4 to 12; WhatsApp 011-2828 8676 for the partnership pack.

Three models, three different days

The biggest practical difference between the models is when the centre is busy. A preschool runs in the morning. An after-school care centre fills up from school dismissal until early evening. A tuition centre is busiest in the late afternoon, evening and on weekends.

Your premises, your family life and your own energy decide which of these you can sustain. An owner who wants weekends free will struggle with a pure tuition model; an owner with young children of their own may prefer a preschool timetable.

  • Preschool (tadika, ages 4 to 6): mornings, registered with KPM
  • After-school care (安亲班, ages 7 to 12): weekday afternoons, KPM and/or JKM depending on model and state
  • Tuition centre (ages 7 and up): evenings and weekends, registered with KPM through JPN

Which model suits your premises?

A tuition centre can run in a modest commercial unit with classrooms and a reception. An after-school care centre needs more: space for meals, rest and a shower, and if JKM registration applies, minimum floor area per child and separate zones. A preschool needs child-sized facilities, outdoor or activity space and a layout suitable for young children.

All three generally require commercial premises, a Bomba letter and local council licences. Before signing a lease, describe your intended model to KPM/JPN, JKM and your council and confirm that the unit can be approved for it; retrofitting a wrong unit is one of the most expensive mistakes a new owner can make.

Which model suits your background?

Experienced teachers and tutors usually lean towards a tuition model because it is closest to what they already do. People with operations or business backgrounds often do well with after-school care, where routine, safety, food and parent communication matter as much as teaching. Those with early-childhood training or a love of young children gravitate to preschool.

None of these is a rule. What matters more is honesty about your strengths and a system that fills the gaps. Full training is provided to DuoDuo Kidz Academy partners, so a teaching qualification is not required.

Which model do parents in Malaysia need most?

Demand for all three is real, but it is concentrated differently. Dual-income households and the SJK(C) homework load create daily demand for after-school care. Preschool demand is driven by parents who want their child reading before Primary 1. Tuition demand grows as school-based assessment makes gaps visible earlier.

The families who stay longest are those who get real learning, not just a place to be. That is the gap most owners can fill if their model includes teaching, whichever timetable it runs on.

How DuoDuo combines the three

DuoDuo Kidz Academy runs three programmes in one centre for ages 4 to 12: a Holistic Preschool Programme for ages 4 to 6 in the morning, an Educare After-School Programme with meals, shower, guided homework and a daily one-to-one trilingual lesson, and a 1-to-1 Trilingual Language Programme in Chinese, Bahasa Malaysia and English. The same staircase word-recognition system, with targets such as about 1,000 words by age 6 for Primary 1 readiness, runs through all three.

For a partner, that means one set of premises works across the whole day, one team is trained in one method, and one family can stay with the centre from age 4 to age 12. Six branches across KL, Perak, Penang and Melaka run this way today, with a 4.9 out of 5 parent rating.

FAQ

Can one centre be a tuition centre and a 安亲班 at the same time?

Often yes, subject to the approvals for each activity. Confirm with KPM/JPN, JKM and your local council how a combined model is registered in your state.

Which model needs the least space?

A tuition-only centre generally needs the least. After-school care and preschool need additional areas for meals, rest and activities, and JKM rules may set minimum space per child.

Does a DuoDuo partner have to run all three programmes?

The combined model is how DuoDuo centres operate, and it is discussed with each partner based on premises and location. WhatsApp us to talk it through.
