25 Questions to Ask When Visiting a Preschool or Learning Centre in Malaysia

A good visit lets you see the children, meet the teachers and ask direct questions. Focus on five areas: safety and registration, teachers and class size, what and how children learn, communication and fees, and a trial class. Write your questions down, visit during a normal class if possible, and trust how the children and teachers actually behave, not only the brochure.

How to use the visit well

A tour is your chance to see daily life, not a marketing performance.

Visit when children are there

Ask to visit during class time. Watch how teachers speak to children, how children respond and how the room feels.

Bring a short list

Bring your questions and notes, and compare at least two or three places. Ask the same questions each time so the answers are comparable.

The 25 questions

Choose the ones that matter most to your family.

By topic

Safety, registration and environment (questions 1 to 6)

Is the centre registered with the relevant authority? How are pickups managed? Are there CCTV, first-aid and fire safety? Is the space clean and child-friendly? What is the sickness policy? How is outdoor play supervised?

Quick tip: ask to see documents

A good centre will not mind.

Teachers, class size and learning (questions 7 to 15)

What are the teachers' qualifications and experience? What is the child-to-teacher ratio? How do you support children at different levels? What is a typical day? How do you teach reading in each language? How do you handle behaviour? How are progress and feedback shared?

Quick tip: ask for examples

Ask for a sample timetable or progress report.

Fees, communication and trial (questions 16 to 25)

What do fees include? Are there registration, materials or other charges? What is the refund and absence policy? How do you contact parents? Can we see a trial class? How do you handle a child who is not settling? What are your hours?

Quick tip: ask for written fees

Get fees in writing to compare.

Signs of a good fit

Trust what you see.

  • Children look engaged and comfortable.
  • Teachers kneel to speak at the child's level.
  • Answers are clear and specific, not vague.
  • The centre welcomes questions and a trial.
  • You can picture your child there happily.

After the visit

Write down your impressions the same day, compare fees in writing, and if possible do a trial class. Ask your child how they felt.

Choose the place where both you and your child feel comfortable, not necessarily the biggest or cheapest.
