Maksud Preschool & Kindergarten: Tadika vs Prasekolah Explained
Maksud preschool in Malay is prasekolah, and maksud kindergarten is tadika: both mean early education for children aged 4 to 6 before Primary 1. A tadika is a kindergarten registered with the Ministry of Education (KPM), a taska is a childcare centre for children under 4 registered with the Department of Social Welfare (JKM), and prasekolah is the umbrella term that covers tadika as well as government preschool classes. DuoDuo Kidz Academy runs a Holistic Preschool Programme for ages 4 to 6.

Maksud preschool and kindergarten: the short answer
Preschool in Malay is prasekolah, and kindergarten in Malay is tadika. In everyday Malaysian use the two English words mean the same thing: the years of learning a child has at ages 4, 5 and 6, before entering Year 1 in the year he turns 7.
The word tadika comes from taman didikan kanak-kanak, a “garden of education for children”. Apa itu kindergarten? It is the German-origin word for exactly the same idea, a “children's garden”. So when a parent asks the difference between preschool and kindergarten in Malaysia, the honest answer is that there is very little; the real differences are between tadika, taska and the type of prasekolah.
Tadika, taska and prasekolah: who registers what
Malaysia uses three Malay terms, and each points to a different age group and authority. Knowing them helps you read signboards and ask the right questions.
- Tadika (kindergarten): education for ages 4 to 6, registered with KPM through the state education department (JPN) and guided by the national preschool curriculum (KSPK)
- Taska (taman asuhan kanak-kanak, childcare centre): care for babies and children under 4, registered with JKM
- Prasekolah (preschool): the umbrella term for all education at ages 4 to 6, including private tadika and government preschool classes attached to national schools or run by public agencies
Beza prasekolah dan tadika: the difference in practice
Every tadika is a prasekolah, but not every prasekolah is called a tadika. A government preschool class inside a primary school is prasekolah; a private kindergarten in a shoplot is a tadika. Both serve the same age and follow the same national curriculum framework.
What differs between centres is the teaching: class size, how many languages a child hears daily, whether reading is taught deliberately, and whether you can see your child's progress. These matter far more to a 5-year-old than the label on the gate.
Which one does a 4, 5 or 6-year-old need?
A child under 4 belongs in a taska, where care comes first. From 4, a child is ready for a tadika or prasekolah, where learning comes first: language, early literacy and the habits of a classroom.
By 6, the question is Primary 1 readiness. For an SJK(C)-bound child, that means recognising about 1,000 Chinese characters, which is the age-6 target of DuoDuo Kidz Academy's staircase word-recognition system (独家阶梯式认字系统). The steps before it are about 150 words at 4 and 500 at 5.
- Under 4: taska (childcare, JKM)
- Age 4: tadika or prasekolah, first words and classroom habits
- Age 5: tadika or prasekolah, growing vocabulary in all three languages
- Age 6: tadika or prasekolah with a clear Primary 1 readiness target
