How to Check Your Child's Chinese Word Count at Home: A Simple Sampling Method
You can estimate your child's Chinese word count in about fifteen minutes using a sampling method: choose 50 characters at random from a list of 500 common words, ask your child to read each one, and multiply the number read correctly by ten. It is a rough estimate, not a test result, but it shows where your child is today and whether the number is growing from month to month.

Why measure word count
Chinese reading is built on recognising whole characters, so the number of characters a child recognises is one of the clearest signs of progress.
Numbers make progress visible
Children and parents often feel unsure whether practice is working. A simple count every month shows growth, motivates the child and helps you adjust the plan.
A rough guide to common targets
Programmes set different targets. A common DuoDuo ladder is about 150 characters at age 4, about 500 at age 5 and about 1,000 at age 6 for children heading to Chinese primary school. Treat these as a guide, not a pass or fail line.
A step-by-step sampling test
Choose a calm moment when your child is rested and happy.
Fifteen minutes, three steps
Step 1: prepare a list
Use a graded list of 500 common characters, such as a school list or the DuoDuo online self-check. Pick every tenth character to get 50 samples, or let the tool choose.
Quick tip: print large cards
Write each character big and clear on its own card.
Step 2: ask your child to read
Show each card and give about three seconds. Count it as known only if the child says the correct word without help. Do not correct during the test; just note the result and say thank you.
Quick tip: keep the tone light
Say it is a game of "which ones do you know?".
Step 3: calculate and record
Count the correct cards and multiply by ten, for example 18 correct out of 50 means about 180 characters. Write the date and number. Repeat monthly using different samples.
Quick tip: note the patterns
Check whether missed words share a part or theme.
What to do with the result
Use the result to plan, not to compare.
- Add 3 to 5 new characters a week and revise old ones daily.
- Group new characters by theme or radical to make them easier to remember.
- Play recognition games for five to ten minutes a day.
- Re-test once a month and chart the growth.
- If progress stalls for two months, ask a teacher for a check.
Limits of a home estimate
Sampling gives an estimate, not a precise number. A child may read words in a list but not in a sentence, or know characters by sound only. Reading comprehension and writing are separate skills.
If something worries you, a teacher can check reading, understanding and writing in a short 1-to-1 session.

FAQ
How many Chinese characters should my child know?
It depends on the programme. A common DuoDuo ladder is about 150 at age 4, 500 at age 5 and 1,000 at age 6.
Is the home estimate accurate?
It is a rough guide. A larger sample or a teacher's check gives better accuracy.
How often should I re-test?
Once a month is enough to see growth without making it feel like exams.
What if my child knows fewer words than the guide?
Do not worry. Start from where they are and build steadily.
Is the DuoDuo trial class really free?
Yes. The trial is one free 60-minute 1-to-1 lesson in a single language subject (Chinese, Bahasa Malaysia or English), with no payment and no obligation, so you can see your child's real starting point.
