Apa Itu Phonics? What It Is and When Your Child Should Start
Apa itu phonics? Phonics is the method of reading English by linking each letter or letter group to its sound, so a child can sound out a word he has never seen, such as c-a-t to “cat”. It is different from learning letter names (A, B, C), and the best time to start is age 4 to 5, when children are ready to hear the separate sounds in words. At DuoDuo Kidz Academy, English follows letter sounds → phonics → vocabulary → reading.

Apa itu phonics? The plain answer
Phonics teaches a child that letters stand for sounds, and that sounds join to make words. Once a child knows the sounds, a new word stops being a mystery: he says each sound and blends them together. That is how “s-u-n” becomes “sun” without anyone telling him the answer.
English has 26 letters but around 44 sounds, so phonics also covers letter groups such as “sh”, “ch” and “ee”. A child who has these tools can read most of the words in an early English book on his own.
Letter sounds vs letter names
Many children in Malaysia can sing the ABC song and still cannot read, because they learned letter names, not letter sounds. The name of B is “bee”, but in a word it says /b/. A child who reads “bee-a-tee” will never reach “bat”.
This is why good English teaching starts with letter sounds. Names are useful later for spelling aloud; sounds are what unlock reading.
- Letter name: what the letter is called (A = “ay”, C = “see”)
- Letter sound: what the letter says in a word (a in “apple”, c in “cat”)
- Blending: joining sounds to read a word (c-a-t → cat)
When should a child start phonics?
Age 4 to 5 is the best time. At this age most children can hear that “mat” and “map” begin the same and end differently, which is the listening skill phonics needs. Starting at 4 or 5 also means the child is reading simple English words before Primary 1, not learning letters in Year 1 while classmates read.
Starting later is not a disaster, but the gap shows quickly. By Year 2 and Year 3, English passages and exam papers assume the child can decode words, and a child without phonics falls back on guessing from pictures.
How phonics leads to reading
Phonics is a bridge, not the destination. Once a child can sound out words, vocabulary grows quickly because every new word can be read, and reading short passages becomes possible. Phonics works alongside sight words, the common words such as “the” and “said” that are recognised whole.
At DuoDuo Kidz Academy the English path is fixed: letter sounds → phonics → vocabulary → reading. Each stage is taught 1-to-1 at the child's level, and each child has a personal progress chart so you can see where she stands. Want to know exactly how we teach phonics to a 4-year-old? FAQ
Is phonics the same as learning the ABC?
No. The ABC song teaches letter names. Phonics teaches letter sounds and how to blend them into words, which is what reading needs.
Is 4 too young for phonics?
No. Age 4 to 5 is the best time to start, as long as it is taught 1-to-1 at the child's pace.
Does DuoDuo teach phonics?
Yes. Phonics is the second step of DuoDuo's English path: letter sounds → phonics → vocabulary → reading.
